There’s a common tip that has been floating around the writing world since the beginning;
Read. Read anything and everything but especially read within your genre.
I touched on this subject already in a previous post titled “2013 RITA Winners” where I listed the winners, their book that won the award and their social media information. I mentioned on that blog the importance of reading books in your genre that have won awards, as a measuring tool for your own work.
Now, I want to go further. You don’t only need to know how to write a good book within your genre but a book that the readers actually want to spend money on. One way to do that is to read the books that people are buying. Next, follow the authors of those books to learn more about them and their inner circles (sounds devious doesn’t it?? lol) and then familiarize yourself with the publishers that appear on the list as well.
What does it take to be a best selling author these days?
My focus for this post is Amazons best seller list for kindle books. I took the information on January 2014. I’m telling you this because they update the page hourly so it might have different people on it today. Use this information how you see fit, but for me I’m hoping to get to know the authors on it and have a better understanding of what the publishers are looking for.
I’m my attempt to gather the author information I chose to include their author website (which usually lists any social media outlets you can find them on). If I did not find an author website then I chose their Amazon author page. If that was not available I either choose their Goodreads profile, Facebook profile or their Twitter account. There are a few authors and publishers that I could not find any reliable information on. If you know it, please contact me so I that I can include it on the post.
There is 100 names on Amazon’s best sellers list but I only took the first 50 authors. On Amazon’s best seller page they do not include multiple names on a group book until you click the books page. Therefore, for a book with multiple authors I just included the name that was written on the main page (sorry).
Side Note: I ran across two websites that will give you the current earning and statistics of a book. So, not only can you learn more about the author, their inner circle, the work that sells, and who published it but you can also learn just how many people have purchased it online and how much money it is potentially making. Check them out!
